Alien Covenant - My first Alien experience (Review written: May 16, 2017)
The Alien franchise is a highly popular horror franchise. It all started with the original Alien movie, which came out in 1979. From that day, Alien has gained popularity all over the world, and is now the highest-crossing horror movie franchise of all times. Despite all that – and the fact that I’m a horror movie fan – I have never seen an Alien movie. I don’t know how nor why.
– Story – Alien Covenant (2017) is the latest Alien entry, and as far as I understood, it linked some “mysteries” together from the earlier movies. Even though this was my first Alien movie, I don’t feel like it made my experience any worse, maybe even better since I heard that the earlier movies were similar. Covenant is a colony ship, with a purpose of creating a new human colony to planet Origae-6, a habitable Earth-like planet. Well as you can probably guess, things go wrong and some aliens show up. Surprise!
Covenant ship was launched to the space 10 years after Promotheus, which was the ship on the earlier Alien Promotheus (2013) movie.
– Thoughts – I think Covenant’s plot was interesting. The movie wasn’t too predictable, even though I predicted the ending almost instantly when I saw what was happening. I looked forward to getting answers on what was happening on the planet that Covenant started to investigate. I got some answers, not for every question I had, but maybe that’s because I haven’t seen the earlier movies. The acting and cinematography were both good, nothing groundbreaking, but still enjoyable.
I liked Covenant. Making a good alien movie is hard, and I’m speaking of the alien genre, not franchise. I think there were few things I would change, for an example how fast the alien grew up from a little one to bigger than a human.
But yeah, the movie was good. I would rate it as 7/10, it's not a high score, but good for this kind of a movie. Go watch it if you like some sci-fi movies with aliens and stuff.
Update: I just saw Prometheus, and it definitely explained some things from Covenant. Yeah.. I recommend watching the earlier Aliens before you watch Covenant.
If you liked Alien Covenant, I also suggest watching Life (2017). I think Life was better, but Covenant showed life outside of a spaceship, which I enjoyed a lot. I wish the discovered planet had been little bit different than Earth though, why did it have all the same plants and stuff?
